Release Notes
Kenton Nix was one of West End's secret weapons and his proto-house debut “There's Never Been (No One Like You)” is, quite rightly, regarded as one of the most emotionally enriching disco records of all time. For many, it's quite simply the best song ever; regardless of genre.
Its truly heartfelt lyrics, uplifting rhythm and pure vibes, allied to the most infectious hook imaginable and a bassline to die for, make this a hard argument to refute. It's outrageously stellar but you likely know this already. As one wag on YouTube correctly states, "The best part starts at 0:00".
A huge favourite of DāM FunK, “There's Never Been (No One Like You)” is a smoothed out soulful Disco jam and a total Paradise Garage classic. Produced by the mighty Kenton Nix (Kenix - get it?) - whose credits include Taana Gardner, Gwen McCrae and The Treacherous Three - it features the exceptional vocal talents of underground Soul singer Bobby Youngblood.
This pressing features both the long "dance" version and the shorter 7" mix of the track just like the original pressing from 1980.
It's impossible to overstate the importance of West End, not just in disco but in hip-hop and house as well, thanks to a roster that drew from soul, R&B, gospel, and funk. Led by co-founder Mel Cheren, a formidable NYC figure, West End Records helped introduce the twelve-inch single and fully fuelled the sound of both the Paradise Garage and Studio 54.
This bonafide underground dance classic has been carefully remastered by Be With regular Simon Francis and presented in the original West End Records house disco sleeve for the very first time. Cut at the prestigious Abbey Road Studios, we have made sure nothing is lost in the cut whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at the always stellar Record Industry in Holland. The artwork restoration has taken place here at Be With HQ and has that drop-dead gorgeous cover artwork popping like new. Buy on sight!
